At great cost, Joyce checked CT and saw no Peregrines. She had better luck at UB, spotting two banded pefas, BB most likely at the box and the other on a ledge. Both birds then flew north.

As you can see, the Peregrines were all over CT today!

Roger and I first stopped at UB but the birds weren't home. Then on to CT, downtown and the cement elevators, but no luck there either. Back at CT and both pefas were there! I texted friends from Rochester who were also here looking for the Peregrines. Joyce, Carol, MAK, KathyO and Dana were at UB watching BB but hurried right over to CT. The tiercel was really showing off for Stella, flying circles around the tower and sometimes flying together. We don't know where Stash is this winter but he's in for a surprise when he returns. We're all wondering what Stella's reaction will be.

News from Canada: Frightful, banded at CT this year, who was rescued with wing injuries will be released next spring, according to the Owl Foundation, as he is not yet well-enough healed.

We got a few shots in between the snow and smoke hiding our bird. We couldn't see the bands but think it was BB hunkered down and trying to stay warm in the tower's heat. It must be difficult to find prey on a day like this.

It was a crisp and partially sunny day, so we checked out UB and CT and were lucky enough to find all four peregrines flying around their towers.

BB was flying around with a male today! The last few visits we made to UB, she was alone.

The adult Peregrines at the tower are not Stash and Stella, who nested here this year. It was a first-time nest for Stella who was a sub-adult the previous year when the pair apparently bonded at this site. Stash and Stella produced five successful fledges this year, who stayed around for quite a while before they started flying to some nearby church steeples.

Dyngus's body was later found along the thruway and Frightful wound up at the Owl Foundation in Ontario with minor injuries. We have no further information about Frightful.

It is unknown if Stash and Stella were displaced in a fight or perhaps migrated away, leaving their nestsite available. Now we are trying to ID the new pair though both birds are apparently from the east.

Jacquie Walters, DEC, visited CT again today and sent me these pix taken this afternoon.

The huge female, also shown in yesterday's blog, has a silver band on the right leg.

This male is also a very large bird, the kind of large we might think a female but we'll just assume he's fluffed up against the cold November winds which fiercely blow through this site. Jacquie saw green showing through the feathers on the left leg of the male. So, these birds are from eastern states but until we can get a better view and catch some numbers, it remains yet another Buffalo mystery. Where are Stella and Stash?

Detectives are needed! Any local Peregrine watchers out there? Or visiting Rochester watchers? We need your help at Central Terminal! Contact us if you can watch, or if you do see any Peregrines in the Buffalo area!

I just received an email from Jacquie Walters at the DEC with great news!

First we went to Times Beach and saw a few Herons, Greater Yellowlegs, and Hooded Mergansers. Afterwards, we went to the grain elevators to scope for PeFas. None were on the old Cargill place, but as soon as we looked over at Holcim Connie spotted them right away. They were both perched on the huge Holcim sign! The male, who is white-breasted, was perched on top of the sign guarding the female who was sitting behind the sign right next to him eating a prey item. She has a tawny-colored breast and is rather big, so it is very easy to tell them apart. It was so great to see them still in the area! I wonder who else is overwintering? UB, CT, and Statler for sure. It would be interesting to know if our bridge and gorge birds are sticking around too.

So if you're in any of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls pefa areas and spot our birds, please report in!

"The Owl Foundation Ontario has a visitor from the United States! Meet "Frightful", a young male Peregrine Falcon recovered in Burlington. Frightful is recovering from road rash and severe bruising to the underside of his right wing. He's still very sore, but is enjoying the space and quail he's receiving in his flight training complex. Frightful was banded at Buffalo Central Terminal this past spring."

Central Terminal's little Frightful was rescued today in Ontario, and taken to a rehab. Nothing serious, a wing abrasion, and release is anticipated shortly.

On a sadder note, Central Terminal's Dyngus likely had a fatal collision with a car as he was found by the Clinton exit of the thruway this week.

These reports along with Roger having seen a lot of flying activity at CT a couple days ago, make we wonder why they are still in the vicinity at this time of year. I would have expected them to be migrating by now, and especially Dyngus, going north instead of south as winter approaches is curious.

Roger made a run by UB and CT today in the rain and was rewarded by finding a few pefas at home. BB was on MacKay Tower at UB, you can see the rain in that pic. At CT he saw two on the tower but said at least three were flying around. Are some of the kids still here? We'll have to check again tomorrow!

We met many of the fantastic Rochester falcon-watchers this weekend at the Saturday breakfast in the park. More watchers arrived after these pictures were taken. I wish they would all move to Buffalo!

Callidora was spotted bringing her breakfast to the event which she ate from a building next to the park! Later, two pefas were seen flying overhead before they disappeared behind the buildings. We hope Callidora's brother Jemison can soon join her and give the dedicated falcon watchers a wonderful treat!

One of the Potter boys was on the Winspear side at first and then he flew around to the other side. Then he flew to the nestbox,, went inside, came out and sat on both perches, flapped, then flew off. He flew to the opposite side and landed right where BB was perched, displacing her. She then flew away towards the south.

Before we left we saw two juvies flying away from MacKay over the UB campus. Again, I cannot say for sure if there are two or three juvies until I can see three at once. Sorry!

It was after eight pm when we approached UB and the light was fading. First we saw an adult on the water tower but couldn't find any of the kids around the VA. Then one of the boys flew to MacKay Tower and he seemed to be looking for the others to join him. He flew off a few times and landed the last time at the very top of the tower - Winspear side.

At Central Terminal we saw some flying to and from the tower but nothing more.Carolyn saw them earlier this evening playing aerial games and much more active. Carolyn is a photographer, likes Peregrines and is looking for something to do...........................hmmmmmmm......................... :)))

Jacquie Walters, a new and very competent DEC tech sent this report from her CT Pefa watch this morning:

I went to CT today and had a blast watching the kids flying around! When I first got there I couldn't find anybody. Then after a few minutes one of the adults came flying in and I heard 5 voices calling out from all different areas of the tower. Some were on the back side and some were on the side facing the traffic circle. Two had been sitting way back on a ledge near the top and had made themselves "invisible". Not long after that everyone started flying around the tower and landing on different ledges, two took off and soared out of sight for a while with one of the adults before coming back and perching again.

While everyone was resting in the shade on the tower, I spotted a large dark bird soaring in the distance (looking toward that old tan building with the black roof behind the parking lot), I was pretty sure it was an eagle, but it was too far away to get a good look at it. I didn't think anything of it and continued spying on the PeFas. About ten minutes later the only chick that had perched on the parking lot side of the tower (the others were either on the back or on the side facing the traffic circle) began squawking loudly. The juvenile eagle had come closer and was circling very close to the tower! The fledgling flew off to the back of the tower still squawking loudly and immediately both parents shot out from that side like lightning and attacked the eagle! It was such an amazing sight! This eagle didn't know what hit it. Both parents were yelling at it and taking turns diving at it right over my head! They chased it away out of sight, toward the northeast! A few minutes later one of the adults came back and started circling for prey. I watched it diving at a few pigeons before I had to leave to get back to the office.

Today she was front and center as we drove up the driveway to Central Terminal, practicing walking on the large arch. Maneuvering up the slope she learns to combine steps and wing action before deciding to take flight.

We arrived at Central Terminal to find little Sage on the opposite side of the lower building, clearly in sight as we approached. She was diligently practicing her wing-flaps. The rest were on the other side with parents in attendance. Stash and Stella have been treating the kids to numerous flying demonstrations and later in the evening when we expected to find them all hunkering down, they were all gone! We waited til almost dark but either they didn't yet return or they were perfecting their skills of "invisibility".

Grain Elevators/Holcim - no peregrines seen in a couple weeks!

UB - Two of the kids are seen flying over the VA Hospital. Unless we can see three at the same time we cannot say for sure that there still are three. Lack of colored tape on right legs hampers IDs at these distances.

Niagara Gorge - Adult pefa observed in the opening previously used as a nestsite for two hours without moving. Very odd. All the other area pefas have fledged, and this nestsite was empty with weeds growing in it til very late into nesting season.

Statler Building - Since all five have fledged there haven't been any reports of sightings.

When we got there today, no bird was in sight! No parents on their usual lookouts; no ledglings we could see. After scouring every nook and cranny as well as possible from the ground with binocs, we drove till we found a street and a spot where from a great distance we could see the very back of the CT complex. Nothing. Before giving up, we went back to the tower and a couple of the kids had woken up and came out of their excellent hiding places!

This is the little one with the yellow tape who had been rescued Monday after winding up down in this debris-filled well four stories below ground level. It is under the 12th floor nestbox, shown below, which means she fell about sixteen stories to this well covered with broken beer bottles, wire and filth. This little pefa did not have an official name after the banding and Connie let me know she wanted to name it Sage. I am honored to have this little Peregrine bear the name.

Stash, Jr. has actually fledged, at least to the adjoining roofs six stories below the nestbox. He had been crawling along the roof edges and snuggling up with another ledgling to sleep on the ledge under the arched roof. Today found him back on the nestbox ledge with his little sister, and sometimes there were three or four there!

Although one parent came back and gave flying demos both were gone much of the time, hopefully with the fledges!

Central Terminal really is Peregrine Palace, with many architectural ledges, points, flat and arched roofs, with plenty of room for even this brood of five. And this is good because unlike UB or the Statler, the larger area is devoid of any other tall buildings which could serve as training grounds for landings and take-offs.

Buffalo had very bad storms in the past twenty-four hours. Intellicast radar showed a very bad cell directly over Central Terminal today which is probably when the little one got blown off the ledge. She landed at the bottom of a debris-filled well which extended four stories below ground level. The 21 y/o son of Mark Lewandowski, M.J., helped Connie Adams rescue the little female named Sage.

After checking the fledgling Connie then tried to release to the fourth floor level roof where the other fledglings are but she refused to exit the carrier. She was then carried to the twelfth-floor and returned to the nestbox, much to the relief of the parents flying wildly above the scene.

She promptly jumped out of the nestbox and on to the ledge below the box where she had spent the previous day. See her to the right? Dad keeps on eye on her from above the clock.

~More Peregrine Fun at Central Terminal~

The Central Terminal's new Peregrine family is so much fun to watch! Stash and Stella are such attentive parents now that their kids are getting acquainted with roofs. Stash stays close to the nest, sometimes perched over the nearby clock as he surveys his kingdom. Stella loves the antenna over the adjoining roof where two of the kids are exploring.

Stash flew in with some prey which he left on the higher roof where one of the kids eagerly ran over to it. The ledgling on the lower roof was enticed to give a couple tries and actually made the jump to the higher roof above. So interesting to watch these interactions!

Buffalo is exploding with new Peregrine falcons lately, and the latest five are starting to leave the nest this week!

~Central Terminal Peregrines Fledging~

The nestbox at Central Terminal must be getting crowded because the kids are leaving the box 1-2 weeks earlier than expected! Last week one was on the ledge under the nestbox. All seemed quiet this morning with Stash and Stella on higher perches. A couple large eyasses were at the front of the box blocking the view of those behind them.

We returned about 6pm to see Stash and Stella flying around over the lower middle building and immediately saw why! Little Stash Jr. was crawling along the ledge quite a bit lower than the nest!

This morning both BB and Yankee were perched on MacKay but the kids weren't seen there, which is odd at this stage of the fledgling. BB even went nto the box as if looking for them

We returned this evening to find two of the fledges on the same nestbox perch! Then we went to the other side to find the third, and I saw one fly by, but didn't know which bird it was. When we got around the tower there was just one pefa now on the perch, but another was eating prey atop Clark. We are assuming this one was one of the two from the perch, though it could be a third. No way to be positive without seeing all three at once.

Then the other perched boy took off and wound up on the very top of MacKay Tower.

Roger, photographer for Peregrine Place, took his grandchildren Katie and Matthew to Central Terminal today and ran into Jacquie Walters, DEC tech, who had just spotted the first little ledgling on the ledge under the nestbox!

Jacquie today spotted a Peregrine in the Niagara Gorge that appeared to be mantling an eyass. This site needs more checking.

Last week Jacquie helped rescue and release a Statler early fledge, banded the Central Terminal eyasses, and while observing the South Grand Island Bridge site, saw the only eyass fall to the concrete bridge piling. She ran to someone at Collins Marine who immediately took her out to the spot, the chick fell into the river, then got swamped by the wake from another boat! He was floating upside down when Jacquie got to him. She lifted him out of the water thinking he must be dead but then water poured out of his beak! The bird was taken to the SPCA and will be fine! Whew! He will not be returned to that dangerous nest site which had more birds land in the river last year and there will likely be a nestbox installed before next season to help assure successful nestings in the future. Jacquie has had an exhilarating introduction to her new job!

All but one of the Statler kids has left the nest now. We know the large female named "Statler" was flying high after her release from the top of City Hall Tuesday.

This little one got way over to the extreme left side from the nest, negotiating the big gaps where the ledge is missing, but unable to figure out how to get around the corner.

The little ledgewalker to the left was going back and forth, and then this larger fledgling flew to the tower doing beautiful turns and landing right behind little one! Must be a girl, but no band seen so it is not "Statler". So, today we have accounted for four of the five Peregrines from this site and both parents.

BB perched on the VA Hospital across Bailey Avenue from UB signaling the Potter boys have found their way to this wonderful flight-training base camp! With all its many roof levels and antennas, last year's pefas loved flying to and from this building, back and forth to the UB campus, until they were sufficiently confident to go on their way to newer, bigger adventures. We saw one of the newly fledged birds flying circles over the VA. Tomorrow we'll see more!

~Peregrine Banding Day at Buffalo's Central Terminal~

Buffalo's newest Peregrine nestbox was installed on the Central Terminal Tower after Stash and Stella chose the site as their own. Stella was a sub-adult last year when the pair was observed daily on the tower's ledges.

The DEC and the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation joined forces and installed a nestbox to help ensure successful nesting. A safe place with shelter from Buffalo's harsh weather, some gravel, a flight deck and perches give the Peregrines a greater chance survival than they would otherwise have.

It is also remarkable that Stash and Stella's first nesting produced five healthy eyasses! They had just been fed by both parents prior to the banding, in fact, the banding had to wait a bit when we saw all the feeding activity. When the feeding was finished, the parents flew off and the chicks were removed from nestbox.

The Statler's first fledge of 2010 is a female! She landed in the street on June 14, was rescued, got a clean bill of health, was banded and named "Statler" as she may be the last banded Peregrine from this site. The DEC is denied access to the Statler building by the Bankruptcy Court, even for banding or rescues. Please, new fledges, fly free and safely!

Just a fast post to let you know the Statler bird who went to the street yesterday has been given a clean bill of health, she was banded and named "Statler" by Connie! How cool is that! "Statler" was taken to the top of City Hall this afternoon by Jackie, DEC tech, and released! "Statler" sat on the post for a while, then flapped like crazy and took off toward the Statler, calling out! A parent immediately responded and flew to her! Don't you love a story like this? :))) Of course, pix will follow later today, oh! One more thing, we saw four chicks still in the nestbox while "Stater" was not in the box! Just thought you'd want to know! :))

Fledge day 2 Harry and Hagrid were doing fine this morning, flying around the complex and sitting on Clark again. Brother Ron also fledged this morning though he spent a lot of time ledge-walking below the nestbox. The fledglings were flying together between MacKay and Clark when I spotted some gulls trying to join in the fun. Poor Harry got distracted and went down. A new falcon watcher, Dave Williams went over and kept an eye on Harry til I got there with some others. Harry was fine and hopped up to some concrete and then walked along the fence in front of some large electrical transformers and found a way into the fenced compound!

Sue from the complex brought a box, Officer Gamble called Ken Nusstein who came with heavy gloves and rescued Harry. Ken called DEC and then returned Harry to the MacKay roof where BB was anxiously waiting. When we left later, all three fledges were accounted for!

Harry was down on the ground below but hopped up here, then walked around the fencing til he found a spot to crawl through. Once inside, he found himself in a corner and didn't know what to do. The fencing was high and topped with barbed wire so we didn't feel comfortable about his ability to get out.

Harry and Hagrid had an exciting day! Both boys successfully fledged with no mishaps :::whew::: Hagrid flew all the way to Clark and stayed for quite a while exercising his wings and taking in this new world of freedom. Yankee kept an eye on him from MacKay.

Harry spent time on the MacKay Roof practicing the crawl and wing-flapping directly under BB perched on the antenna.

The reluctant Ron spent his time flapping away and gaining confidence so he can join his brothers in all the fun. Parents brought him dinner just before dark this evening.

We returned after dinner to find both boys flying around the tower and getting flying and landing lessons from their parents! What a beautiful sight!

This CT eyass is going to be a handful for the DEC on banding day!

We went to CT twice today and saw both parents flying around the tower. One hovered and the other flew circles over the top of CT! Very cool display. Pix showed just silhouettes because of we were facing into the sun to see the nestbox.

We were also at UB both early in the day and again later in the evening. Two kids were in the corner of the ledge and one in the box, and parent on other side. Later mom flew out of box and minutes later flew back in with food. It's fun to watch the outside and at the same time, watch what's inside the box on the UB cam on my iPhone.

Today we can count four, and if there is a fifth, it's hiding. Look how big they are! The one on the right isn't even on the flight deck, but on the long perch! They are getting ready to broaden their base of operations to soon include more roofs!

Somehow, a chunk of bark off the perch wound up in the nestbox where the kids proceded to check it out. One baby decided he liked it a lot and he claimed it for himself by laying on it for about forty minutes til mom showed up with food. At some point the other half of the perch bark appeared in the box also. Mom checked it out but decided to leave it. As darkness falls, the kids snuggle up in the box, with their new-found toys. This morning, BB flew to the tower and got the boy's attention, then proceeded to give a flying demonstration to her rapt audience of pefa kids.

The Potter boys at UB are feeding themselves now, right now! While BB was finishing off the prey eating a legs, one of the kids grabbed the second leg from her and ran off with it!

One of the boys is tearing apart this big chunk! A brother just grabbed what was left and ran away with it!

We were watching from the Yacht Club and saw a man walking across the bridge above the nestbox. The two nervous parent pefas were flying circles over him. As he got a bit beyond the nestbox area, one pefa flew back to the box and landed on the rail, while the other parent continued to fly overhead.

Around mid-day the Potter boys were all in a heap resting at the back of the box. Enter BB-bearing-bird for lunch. The top two boys got up and ate their fill while the little one seemed unable to rouse.

After a bit he seemed to be trying to raise his head and look backwards toward mom, but to no avail. The two bigger boys ate everything she had and she left without checking on him at all.

He stayed down for about an hour after mom left and then I was elated to see him stand!

He walked to the middle and stood in the divider for an hour, looking but not venturing out further. It relieved my anxiety to see him up though.

Later,

Little one must have been very hungry after missing the big meal earlier. Mom came in with prey and tore a chunk off. Little one grabbed it away from a surprised mom and sibling, and ran to the back of the box with it. BB tried to get it back, but Little one wouldn't let her take it. He held it down with his talons and tore it apart and at the whole thing! Boy, was I relieved!

As darkness fell, all three were back in box snuggled up. :)
As you remember, on banding day BB was having a fit and would not leave the box even for the perch where the previous year she had sat patiently throughout the banding. This year she was fiercely protective and the boys were returned to her as quickly as possible. In the hurry, the colored tape on the right leg band was not used, hence making it difficult to ID the boys with any certainty.

The thought struck me today that feeding those little eyasses pigeons is turning them into Peregrine falcons! So, eating pigeon meat creates peregrines who will eat more pigeons.

Today's news! The Peregrines we watched earlier this spring at the grain elevators near Gallagher Beach apparently fly between there and Holcim Cement elevators. Connie Adams and two of her techs went up to the top of the South End Marina grain elevators (GE) today looking for a nest, but found only prey items. The pefas use that building and the DEC plans to install a nestbox there.

On our regular run this afternoon we found ourselves at the GE as Connie and techs were on site. After they came down we convinced her to check out Holcim just down the road. We had spoken with the guy there a few days ago who said there are pefas there. We all went over there and voila'! A beautiful sub-adult female was spotted near the top. After a bit she flew to another building and sat perched there for a while. Then she flew circles above us as if to take a better look, as usually there would be no people at all in that area. She is banded, but we have to go back for better shots and hopefully an ID. Could it be BB's Tory from UB?

This pair may not be nesting yet, but seem to have picked a nice building in an elegant section of Delaware Avenue. Forest Lawn is very close with water, ducks and birds.

So far, I think that adds up to 17 known new Peregrines for the Buffalo area in 2010!

The MacKay workers report finding numerous Wood Duck remains on the roofs! BB has been extremely protective of nearby roofs causing consternation among the roof workers! She must remember how her kids last year used every roof in sight for their training area. Hardhats are necessary, guys!

Today was Banding Day at UB and all three are boys! UB held a naming contest again this year and Harry Potter names were chosen, so we now have Harry, Ron and Herman which of course was supposed to be Hermoine. Truly awful names for Peregrines, but that's that.

Here's the link to my online web album from the banding. Before we left for UB, we saw on the cam that BB was in the nestbox apparently trying to shade the kids from the strong sun. She never left the box as Mark was trying to get the chicks out for banding and she actually drew blood from his arm with her talons!

Last year she sat quietly on her perch during the procedure but not this time. Yankee was away hunting and finally returned with a pigeon which he took to a ledge above the box, but he was apparently afraid to take it to the box. BB was yelling for him to come and help.

All was well later and the boys are safely in the scrape now. And BB has become a most protective mum! Good save, Barb! :)

We saw the eyasses out on the flight deck from the webcam, so we headed for UB and sure enough, here's the shot from the parking lot!

Roger got this shot of the Statler nest today to determine the number of eyasses. We see at least four and maybe five. Unfortunately, the DEC has been refused access to the building for banding this year.

Both parents were seen at the box together this morning.
Viewers have been concerned and calling the radio stations, DEC, SPCA and UB when then don't see the parents in the nest anymore. Everything is fine. When she's not feeding the eyasses, BB is out on the perch which right now is beyond camera view, or hunting and preparing the prey. Yankee also is either hunting, bringing in food or on lookout perched high above his nest protecting his territory. The chicks now are able to move to the corners of the nestbox, just out of view as well.

As a worried caller told the Tom Baurle show this morning, the parents were leaving the kids alone briefly. They are getting big and trying to move around, so BB and Yankee aren't sitting on them every minute now and both parents will be hunting to feed the growing eyasses.

A big thank you to Rebecca for sending in these great shots of the two peregrines at the Niagara falls gorge that were taken on May 9th of this year. While the search continues to try and identify a possible nest site, (and to identify the birds themselves), it appears that the elusive pair are still very much around and have been quite active. Observation reports of the birds activity have been streaming in from both sides of the border in recent weeks, but the mystery continues with regards to any nesting activity and the birds identity. While both of the birds still remain unidentified at this point, we do have a partial band number and band colour of the female given Rebecca’s photo that indicates that the she dawns a Black over Red colour marker band having a lower alpha digit of H. The USFW band number appears to a coloured band instead of the typical silver coloured band. The photo of the male in flight that shows one of its legs, appears to be unbanded. The mystery contines………..

The UB eyasses are six days old and growing like crazy! Today they are trying to move around more and their feet are getting big! One little baby got his head stuck under the other two and struggled to get free, while another grabbed a big chunk of meat from mom, who luckily pulled it back out.

We're playing the waiting game in Buffalo, knowing any moment our total number of Peregrine falcons will increase! While the status of the Grand Island Bridge nests, the gain elevator and the Niagara gorge are in question, we know we can count on the Statler, UB and Central Terminal, although only UB has a cam monitoring their nest.

I'm falling in love with this cam

broadcasting a 24/7 live feed from Brussels. Five eggs started hatching on April 18 and they are all doing well, and the little eyasses are even stretching their wings. They are nesting on a ledge of the St. Michael

and St Gudula Cathedral and it already seems to be a tight fit!

Thursday morning webcam watch, waiting to get a glimpse of the eggs or maybe something white and fluffy. Here are some of the screencaps but it seems we still have three eggs. There was a lot of fidgeting and moving around on the eggs but it was difficult to get a clear shot. The little eyasses should be joining us real soon though!

We knew there were four eggs but today I am wondering if I'm seeing five!

These photos were taken from the Rand Building, with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35, (not a dslr) which has a 12MP CCD. At 18X optical plus a tele-converter and dropping to 3MP, the resulting 60X optical is equivalent to a 1,600mm - 35mm camera lens. The photos were cropped using about 40% of image and contrast and sharpness enhanced by post-editing. Despite the noise, we were able to see four or possibly five eggs. The defunct and mothballed building is now accessible only in an emergency. Will be watching daily now until the eggs hatch so banding time can be determined.
